Problem 386

AMC 12 late, AIME early
Algebra Difficulty 4.7 Find the answer

Aerith thinks (1.4)(1.4)(1.4)(1.4)^{(1.4)^{(1.4)}} is well-defined, but Bob thinks it diverges. Who is right?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Official solution

Because (1.4)2=1.96<2(1.4)^{2}=1.96<2, the tetrations of 1.4 can never surpass 2, so the expression does not diverge to infinity; Aerith is right.
