Problem 749

AIME late
Algebra Difficulty 5.2 Find the answer

A={x∣log⁡2(x−1)<1},B={x∣∣x−a∣<2}. \begin{array}{l} A=\left\{x \mid \log _{2}(x-1)<1\right\}, \\ B=\{x|| x-a \mid<2\} . \end{array}

If A∩B≠∅A \cap B \neq \varnothing, then the range of real number aa is

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Official solutions — 2

Solution 1

- 1. (−1,5)(-1,5).

From log⁡2(x−1)<1⇒A=(1,3)\log _{2}(x-1)<1 \Rightarrow A=(1,3), ∣x−a∣<2⇒B=(a−2,a+2)|x-a|<2 \Rightarrow B=(a-2, a+2).
If A∩B=∅A \cap B=\varnothing, then a+2⩽1a+2 \leqslant 1 or a−2⩾3a-2 \geqslant 3 ⇒a⩽−1\Rightarrow a \leqslant-1 or a⩾5a \geqslant 5.
Therefore, when A∩B≠∅A \cap B \neq \varnothing, the range of values for aa is (−1,5)(-1,5).

Solution 2

-1. (−1,5)(-1,5).
From log⁡2(x−1)<1⇒A=(1,3)\log _{2}(x-1)<1 \Rightarrow A=(1,3),
∣x−a∣<2⇒B=(a−2,a+2).  |x-a|<2 \Rightarrow B=(a-2, a+2) \text {. }

If A∩B=∅A \cap B=\varnothing, then
a+2⩽1a+2 \leqslant 1 or a−2⩾3a-2 \geqslant 3
⇒a⩽−1\Rightarrow a \leqslant-1 or a⩾5a \geqslant 5.
Therefore, when A∩B≠∅A \cap B \neq \varnothing, the range of values for aa is (−1,5)(-1,5).
