Problem 1214

National Olympiad, first round
Algebra Difficulty 6.2 Prove it

(IMO A1 2022)

Let (an)n⩾1\left(a_{n}\right)_{n \geqslant 1} be a sequence of strictly positive real numbers such that an+12+anan+2⩽an+an+2a_{n+1}^{2}+a_{n} a_{n+2} \leqslant a_{n}+a_{n+2} for all n⩾1n \geqslant 1. Show that a2023⩽1a_{2023} \leqslant 1.

This one wants a proof. Work it on paper, then read the official solution and mark yourself. Be honest about it: the record is only any use to you if it is.

Official solution

Let's rewrite the inequality:

(an−1)(an+2−1)⩽1−an+12 \left(a_{n}-1\right)\left(a_{n+2}-1\right) \leqslant 1-a_{n+1}^{2}

By looking at the signs, we see that if ak>1a_{k}>1 for some k⩾3k \geqslant 3, then necessarily (via k=n+1k=n+1) either ak−11>ak+1a_{k-1}1>a_{k+1}. By repeating this observation, we see that in the first case, we have ak−1,ak+21a_{k-1}, a_{k+2}1, while in the second case, we have ak−2,ak+11a_{k-2}, a_{k+1}1. Set n=k−1n=k-1 in the first case, n=k−2n=k-2 in the second; we then have:

1−an+12⩾(1−an)(1−an+2)1−an+22⩾(1−an+3)(1−an+1) \begin{aligned} & 1-a_{n+1}^{2} \geqslant\left(1-a_{n}\right)\left(1-a_{n+2}\right) \\ & 1-a_{n+2}^{2} \geqslant\left(1-a_{n+3}\right)\left(1-a_{n+1}\right) \end{aligned}

Or (1−an+3)(1−an+1)=(1−an+3)(1−an+12)1+an+1⩾(1−an+3)(1−an)(1−an+2)1+an+1\left(1-a_{n+3}\right)\left(1-a_{n+1}\right)=\frac{\left(1-a_{n+3}\right)\left(1-a_{n+1}^{2}\right)}{1+a_{n+1}} \geqslant \frac{\left(1-a_{n+3}\right)\left(1-a_{n}\right)\left(1-a_{n+2}\right)}{1+a_{n+1}}.

Thus (1+an+1)(1+an+2)(1−an+2)⩾(1−an+3)(1−an)(1−an+2)\left(1+a_{n+1}\right)\left(1+a_{n+2}\right)\left(1-a_{n+2}\right) \geqslant\left(1-a_{n+3}\right)\left(1-a_{n}\right)\left(1-a_{n+2}\right).

But 1−an+2<01-a_{n+2}<0 and 1−an,1−an+3∈]0,1[\left.1-a_{n}, 1-a_{n+3} \in\right] 0,1\left[\right., so (1+an+1)(1+an+2)<1\left(1+a_{n+1}\right)\left(1+a_{n+2}\right)<1, which is a contradiction.
