Problem 1398

National Olympiad, first round
Number theory Difficulty 6.9 Prove it

Let aa, bb be the positive integers greater than 11. Prove that if
ab,  a−1b−1 \frac{a}{b},\; \frac{a-1}{b-1}
differ by 1, then both are integers.

This one wants a proof. Work it on paper, then read the official solution and mark yourself. Be honest about it: the record is only any use to you if it is.

Official solution

1. We start with the given condition that the fractions ab\frac{a}{b} and a−1b−1\frac{a-1}{b-1} differ by 1. This can be expressed as:
∣ab−a−1b−1∣=1 \left| \frac{a}{b} - \frac{a-1}{b-1} \right| = 1

2. We consider the two possible cases for the absolute value equation:
ab−a−1b−1=1ora−1b−1−ab=1 \frac{a}{b} - \frac{a-1}{b-1} = 1 \quad \text{or} \quad \frac{a-1}{b-1} - \frac{a}{b} = 1

3. Case 1:
ab−a−1b−1=1 \frac{a}{b} - \frac{a-1}{b-1} = 1
Simplify the left-hand side:
ab−a−1b−1=a(b−1)−b(a−1)b(b−1)=ab−a−ba+bb(b−1)=bb(b−1)=1b−1 \frac{a}{b} - \frac{a-1}{b-1} = \frac{a(b-1) - b(a-1)}{b(b-1)} = \frac{ab - a - ba + b}{b(b-1)} = \frac{b}{b(b-1)} = \frac{1}{b-1}
Thus, we have:
1b−1=1  ⟹  b−1=1  ⟹  b=2 \frac{1}{b-1} = 1 \implies b-1 = 1 \implies b = 2
Substitute b=2b = 2 back into the equation:
a2−a−11=1  ⟹  a2−(a−1)=1  ⟹  a−2(a−1)2=1  ⟹  a−2a+22=1  ⟹  2−a2=1  ⟹  2−a=2  ⟹  a=0 \frac{a}{2} - \frac{a-1}{1} = 1 \implies \frac{a}{2} - (a-1) = 1 \implies \frac{a - 2(a-1)}{2} = 1 \implies \frac{a - 2a + 2}{2} = 1 \implies \frac{2 - a}{2} = 1 \implies 2 - a = 2 \implies a = 0
This is a contradiction since aa and bb are positive integers greater than 1. Therefore, this case is not possible.

4. Case 2:
a−1b−1−ab=1 \frac{a-1}{b-1} - \frac{a}{b} = 1
Simplify the left-hand side:
a−1b−1−ab=(a−1)b−a(b−1)b(b−1)=ab−b−ab+ab(b−1)=a−bb(b−1) \frac{a-1}{b-1} - \frac{a}{b} = \frac{(a-1)b - a(b-1)}{b(b-1)} = \frac{ab - b - ab + a}{b(b-1)} = \frac{a - b}{b(b-1)}
Thus, we have:
a−bb(b−1)=1  ⟹  a−b=b(b−1)  ⟹  a=b2 \frac{a - b}{b(b-1)} = 1 \implies a - b = b(b-1) \implies a = b^2
Substitute a=b2a = b^2 back into the fractions:
ab=b2b=banda−1b−1=b2−1b−1=(b−1)(b+1)b−1=b+1 \frac{a}{b} = \frac{b^2}{b} = b \quad \text{and} \quad \frac{a-1}{b-1} = \frac{b^2 - 1}{b-1} = \frac{(b-1)(b+1)}{b-1} = b+1
Both ab=b\frac{a}{b} = b and a−1b−1=b+1\frac{a-1}{b-1} = b+1 are integers.

Therefore, the condition that ab\frac{a}{b} and a−1b−1\frac{a-1}{b-1} differ by 1 implies that both fractions are integers.
