Problem 322

AMC 12 late, AIME early
Algebra Difficulty 4.6 Multiple choice

Given the sets P={x∣x2=1}P=\left\{x \mid x^{2}=1\right\} and Q={x∣mx=1}Q=\{x \mid m x=1\}. If Q⊂PQ \subset P, then the number of possible values for the real number mm is:

Pick one

Official solution

−1.(D)-1 .(\mathrm{D}).
∵P={−1,1},Q⊂P,  \because P=\{-1,1\}, Q \subset P \text {, }
∴Q\therefore Q could be ∅,{−1},{1}\varnothing,\{-1\},\{1\}.
When Q=∅Q=\varnothing, m=0m=0;
When Q={−1}Q=\{-1\}, m=−1m=-1;
When Q={1}Q=\{1\}, m=1m=1.
Thus, mm has 3 values: 0,−1,10,-1,1.
