Algebra Difficulty 5.0 AIME, harder Find the answer
The equation x2+2x=i has two complex solutions. Determine the product of their real parts.
A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.
Solution
The solutions are x+1=±e8iπ42. The desired product is then (−1+cos(8π)42)(−1−cos(8π)42)=1−cos2(8π)2=1−2(1+cos(4π))2=21−2
