In a rectangle PQRS with PQ=5 and QR=3, PR is divided into three segments of equal length by points T and U. What is the area of quadrilateral STQU?

Solution
Since PQRS is a rectangle, then PQ is perpendicular to QR. Therefore, the area of △PQR is 21(PQ)(QR)=21(5)(3)=215. Since PT=TU=UR, then the areas of △PTQ,△TUQ and △URQ are equal. Therefore, the area of △TUQ is 31(215)=25. Similarly, the area of △TUS is 25. The area of quadrilateral STQU is the sum of the areas of △TUQ and △TUS, or 25+25=5.
