Find the shortest distance from the line 3x+4y=25 to the circle x2+y2=6x−8y.
A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.
Solution
The circle is (x−3)2+(y+4)2=52. The center (3,−4) is a distance of 32+42∣3⋅3+4⋅−4−25∣=532 from the line, so we subtract 5 for the radius of the circle and get 7/5.
