Algebra Difficulty 4.8 AIME Find the answer
If n is a positive integer such that n3+2n2+9n+8 is the cube of an integer, find n.
A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.
Solution
Since n3<n3+2n2+9n+8<(n+2)3, we must have n3+2n2+9n+8=(n+1)3. Thus n2=6n+7, so n=7.
