Let n≥3n \ge 3 be an integer and let x1,x2,…,xnx_1, x_2, \dots, x_n be real numbers in the interval [0,1][0, 1]. Let s=x1+x2+⋯+xns = x_1 + x_2 + \dots + x_n, with s≥3s \ge 3. Prove that there exist integers ii and jj with 1≤i<j≤n1 \le i < j \le n such that
2j−ixixj>2s−3. 2^{j-i} x_i x_j > 2^{s-3}.

Solution

Let 1≤a<b≤n1 \le a < b \le n be such that 2b−axaxb2^{b-a} x_a x_b is maximal. This choice of aa and bb implies that
xa+t≤2txa,∀t=1−a,2−a,…,b−a−1, x_{a+t} \le 2^t x_a, \forall t = 1-a, 2-a, \dots, b-a-1,
and similarly
xb−t≤2txb,∀t=b−n,b−n+1,…,b−a+1. x_{b-t} \le 2^t x_b, \forall t = b-n, b-n+1, \dots, b-a+1.
Now, suppose that xa∈(12u+1,12u]x_a \in (\frac{1}{2^{u+1}}, \frac{1}{2^u}] and xb∈(12v+1,12v]x_b \in (\frac{1}{2^{v+1}}, \frac{1}{2^v}], and write xa=2−αx_a = 2^{-\alpha}, xb=2−βx_b = 2^{-\beta}. Then
∑i=1a+u−1xi≤2uxa(12+14+⋯+12a+u−1)<2uxa≤1, \sum_{i=1}^{a+u-1} x_i \le 2^u x_a \left( \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{4} + \dots + \frac{1}{2^{a+u-1}} \right) < 2^u x_a \le 1,
and similarly,
∑i=b−v+1nxi≤2vxb(12+14+⋯+12n−b+v)<2vxb≤1, \sum_{i=b-v+1}^{n} x_i \le 2^v x_b \left( \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{4} + \dots + \frac{1}{2^{n-b+v}} \right) < 2^v x_b \le 1,
In other words, the sum of the xi′x'_is for ii outside of the interval [a+u,b−v][a+u, b-v] is strictly less than 22. Since the total sum is at least 33, and each term is at most 11, it follows that this interval must have at least two integers, i.e., a+u<b−va+u < b-v. Thus, by bounding the sum of the xix_i, for i∈[1,a+u]∪[b−v,n]i \in [1, a+u] \cup [b-v, n] like above, and trivially bounding each xi∈(a+u,b−v)x_i \in (a+u, b-v) by 11, we obtain
s<2u+1xa+2v+1xb+((b−v−(a+u)−1)=b−a+(2u+1−α+2v+1−β−(u+v+1)). \begin{aligned} s &< 2^{u+1} x_a + 2^{v+1} x_b + ((b-v-(a+u)-1) \\ &= b-a + (2^{u+1-\alpha} + 2^{v+1-\beta} - (u+v+1)). \end{aligned}
Now recall α∈(u,u+1]\alpha \in (u, u+1] and β∈(v,v+1]\beta \in (v, v+1], so applying Bernoulli's inequality yields
2u+1−α+2v+1−β−u−v−1≤(1+(u+1−α))+(1+(v+1−β))−u−v−1=3−α−β. \begin{aligned} 2^{u+1-\alpha} + 2^{v+1-\beta} - u - v - 1 &\le (1+(u+1-\alpha)) + (1+(v+1-\beta)) - u - v - 1 \\ &= 3 - \alpha - \beta. \end{aligned}
It follows that s−3<b−a−α−βs - 3 < b - a - \alpha - \beta, and so
2s−3<2b−a−α−β=2b−axaxb. 2^{s-3} < 2^{b-a-\alpha-\beta} = 2^{b-a} x_a x_b.
